The Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, as a partner of DigiAgriFood, organized on October 31, 2025, a training workshop on “Smart Farming Systems in Greenhouse Facilities in the Regional Unit of Drama.” The workshop took place in Petrousa, Drama, and was hosted at the modern greenhouse facilities of Wonderplant.
The training focused on hydroponics as an advanced method of cultivating plants without the use of soil, where nutrients are supplied directly to the roots through special aqueous solutions. The types, advantages, and challenges of the method were presented in detail, along with an explanation of how its integration into greenhouse facilities allows for full control of key environmental parameters, such as:
- Temperature (air and root system)
- Humidity and lighting (artificial LED or natural)
- CO₂ levels and ventilation
- Nutrient concentration (EC, pH)
This combination of parameters enables continuous year-round production, with reduced water use and minimal need for pesticides, thus contributing to more sustainable and efficient cultivation practices.
The above topics were presented and analyzed for the benefit of local participants, and following the presentations, a lively discussion and exchange of views took place between attendees and experts, providing valuable insights and advice on the operation and advantages of smart farming systems in greenhouse environments.
