The University of Thessaly is a dynamically developing higher education institution ranked among the top 1000 universities globally according to the Shanghai Ranking of World Universities, 2019. Its mission is to promote knowledge through teaching and research and to contribute to cultural and economic development locally, nationally, and internationally. Currently, the University hosts more than 36,000 undergraduate students and approximately 4,500 postgraduate students and doctoral candidates. It is staffed by over 800 teaching and research staff members and an administrative personnel that consists of 400 individuals.

The University of Thessaly demonstrates a consistent interest in high-quality scientific research, considering it a prerequisite for the production and transmission of new knowledge. It actively engages in applied research through various actions and scientific projects, aiming to enhance the productivity process in a wide range of knowledge areas, with an emphasis on polytechnic, agri-food, biomedical, socio-humanistic fields, among others.

As part of the #DigiAgriFood project, the University aims to support the country’s development potential and improve the global competitiveness of agri-food entities. This includes enhancing crop and livestock performance, optimizing resource utilization, reducing environmental impact, maximizing the income of stakeholders in the agri-food chain, and promoting socially beneficial knowledge. Additionally, the University aims to increase its research competitiveness, target the production of innovative products, and connect students with productive entities to improve the absorption of the country’s intellectual capital. These objectives are supported by the University of Thessaly’s strategic plan, which aims to create development hubs at regional and national levels, attract talent and new researchers, and foster stable hubs of innovation and creativity.
