As the demand for efficient natural resource management continues to rise, farmers are turning to innovative solutions to optimize production and minimize waste. Smart irrigation systems have emerged as a vital technology for sustainable agriculture. By leveraging advanced sensors and remote management tools, these systems enable more effective water use and significantly enhance productivity.
Under the framework of #DigiAgriFood, the first European Digital Innovation Hub in the Hellenic Agri-food sector, the partner American Farm School – Perrotis College, developed and deployed the tago.run platform as a comprehensive smart irrigation system for Hayward kiwifruit farms in the Agios Spyridonas region of Pieria. The installation of soil sensors allowed for real-time monitoring of soil moisture, enabling farmers to irrigate with greater precision and efficiency, thereby minimizing water waste. Simultaneously, air sensors provided accurate measurements of chilling hours, aiding farmers in optimizing preparations for the upcoming growing season.
One of the system’s most pivotal features was the integration of electric valves and a remote management system. These technologies enabled farmers to irrigate their fields remotely, freeing up valuable time to focus on other critical tasks, such as equipment maintenance, fertilizer procurement, and spray preparation. Time that was previously constrained is now utilized more effectively, ensuring the smooth operation of the cultivation process.
Water consumption was significantly reduced compared to traditional empirical methods, while farmers improved crop quality, enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of agricultural production.
